What’s on your social enterprise playlist?

14 Apr

Whilst doing my best to earn a living in freelance-ville, I’ve joined forces with some other similarly unaffiliated types for a new initiative: PopSE!: the pop-up social enterprise think tank. “What is a pop-up social enterprise think tank?”, I hear you cry.

– Well, it’s pop-up (we’ll be in a physical space for a week, commencing May 9th)
– It’s about social enterprise (the broad subject we’ll focus on)
– And it’s a think tank (we’ll be coming up with ideas, contributing to debates, doing pieces of work etc)

You can read more at the website (www.popse.org.uk) as more becomes apparent in the next couple of weeks, and contact us to get involved, suggest topics and collaborate. Most importantly for me, it should avoid becoming the Venn diagram above, and be constructive, collaborative and fun.

To which end, I’ve been putting together a double-sided ultimate compilation playlist mixtape for social enterprise to give us our soundtrack….but would welcome further suggestions. Uploaded to Spotify / iTunes when completed.

SIDE A: Positive about social enterprise

Faith – George Michael
Stand and Deliver – Adam and the Ants
Survivor – Destiny’s Child (Bootylicious was tempting…)
I’m Still Standing – Elton John
Opportunities – Pet Shop Boys
A Change is Gonna Come – Otis Redding / Sam Cooke
Go Do – Jonsi
Heroes – David Bowie
We’re All In This Together – High School Musical (and/or George Osborne)
The Times They Are A-Changin – Bob Dylan

SIDE B: Negative about social enterprise

Another One Bites the Dust – Queen
Is This It? – The Strokes
Money For Nothing – Dire Straits
Dead in the Water – David Gray
What’s Going On? – Marvin Gaye
Elusive – Scott Matthews
Mess – Ben Folds Five
Fake Empire – The National

Won’t Get Fooled Again – The Who

Please post any additional suggestions in the comments…..and I’ll report back with a final Now Here’s What I Call Social Enterprise in the week of PopSE!

    Really good ones, Nick!

Nic’s comment above made me look up other Michael Jackson songs. Cutting room floor list (including some very cheesy ones-
You Are Not Alone, Bad, Smooth Criminal :), Beat It, Scream, Man In The Mirror, Earth Song.

But I think these are two good ones:
    – Don’t stop ’til you get enough, and
    – Wanna be startin’ somethin’

I also think Red Red Wine by UB40 might be appropriate! 🙂

    All the best!

    I mix styles.

    Side A:
    Carmina Burana – Carl Orlff
    International Feel – Todd Rundgren
Birds of Fire – Mahavishnu Orch.
What is Hip? – Tower of Power
What You Got? – Chino XL

    Side B:
    Lux Aeterna – Kronos Quartet
    3rd World – Immortal Technique
Who Am I? – Chino XL
    Skin – Chino XL
    Carry That Weight – Beatles

The Mahavishnu Orch. stuff is heavy. i use Billy Cobham’s “Lunarputians” from Total Eclipse as a cool intermezzo after Birds of Fire.
